This October is the fifth National Dental Hygiene Month. The American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) and the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company join forces to raise awareness about the importance of dental hygiene and good oral health. In honor of National Dental Hygiene Month, your Farmington dentist Dr. Askari wants to recognize her devoted, skilled dental hygienists. She details the many ways hygienists care for patients every day.
Hygienists Wear Many Hats
Dental hygienists fill several important roles that are crucial to the complete dental care of patients as well as to the ability of the office to run smoothly. In addition to providing direct care to patients, hygienists also perform pre-procedure care and post-procedure duties. During a typical check-up and cleaning, Dr. Askari’s hygienists will thoroughly inspect the gums and teeth for irregularities or gum disease and then clean away plaque and tartar buildup. They will conclude with a polishing of the teeth. Dental hygienists can also provide a deep cleaning method that treats gum disease, scaling, and root planing. They are also trained in providing X-rays, fluoride treatments, and sealants. Hygienists will often prepare clinical and laboratory tests and gather the results to be presented to Dr. Askari.
Hygienists Take on Teaching Role
Dr. Askaris’ hygienists truly care for each of their patients, so before you leave our office, they may review a few small tips or a brief overview of dental hygiene techniques for home care. Dr. Askari and her hygienists follow the American Dental Association’s guidelines which state that patients should attend dental cleanings every six months. Your dentist suggests that regular dental cleanings in conjunction with twice-a-day brushing and one-daily flossing will help to protect your teeth from disease and decay.
