Working Toward a Cure for Cavities

Researchers at Yale University and Universidad de Santiago in Chile are working on groundbreaking potential solutions for some of dentistry’s biggest quandaries. Keep 32 is a compound named after the 32 teeth in the human mouth. In early clinical trials, Keep 32 has proven to completely eradicate cavity-causing bacteria from the mouth with only 60 seconds of exposure. Farmington Hills dentist, Dr. Aziza Askari, is always excited to hear about potential dental innovations such as these.

What is Keep 32?

Keep 32 is actually a molecule. Early testing helped scientists compile data showing that the compound completely eliminated the presence of Streptococcus mutants (the bacteria responsible for the development of tooth decay) as well as the germs which cause gum disease. Publication of the results of the research indicates that after five-plus years of fine-tuning their hypothesis, the Keep 32 researchers are close to something huge. The best part for consumers is that the method of choice for administering Keep 32 in trials has been through a delicious hard candy.

The researchers are currently seeking funding for further human trials to ensure safety and efficiency. The scientists have been issued a provisional patent for the Keep 32 molecule. Patent holder – Erich Astudillo – states that this molecule could be incorporated into a number of products such as the more obvious options – toothpaste, dental flosses, and mouthwash. Even better (especially if the product is approved for children) is the potential for Keep 32 to be infused into gums, candy, lollipops, or any substance that the patient can hold in their mouth for at least 60 seconds. Since one in five Americans will suffer from untreated cavities at some point in their lives, research on eradicating the oral germs responsible is always underway in one laboratory or another. Until Keep 32 is proven safe for human consumption, however, Dr. Askari recommends brushing twice daily, flossing every day, and keeping up with your biannual dental checkups at Comfort Dental Spa.
